Japan’s support for a 2nd TSMC fab has been raised to ¥900 billion yen (US$5.94 billion) from ¥770 billion, media report. Japan’s 2023 supplementary budget, which earmarks ¥1.85 trillion for #semiconductor industry support, was approved Friday by the prime minister’s cabinet. Parliament is expected to pass it by 12/13. The total budget plan is ¥13.20 trillion yen ($87 billion), for fiscal 2023, which ends March 31, 2024. A portion of the semiconductor funds will go to Rapidus and Intel

TSMC’s October revenue hit an all-time high for a single month, up 15.7% year-on-year to NT$243.20 billion (US$7.6 billion), and up 34.8% over September. The previous monthly record was Nov. 2022, NT$222.71 billion. TSMC guided 4th quarter revenue in a range of US$18.8 billion - $19.6 billion, at a foreign exchange rate of US$1 : NT$32, for a New Taiwan dollar range of NT$601.6 billion to NT$627.2 billion.

For the year ahead, the world's largest contract chipmaker predicted healthy growth and a drop in industry inventory levels. Demand for personal computers and smartphones, two of TSMC's business drivers, is expected to lead the recovery, with artificial intelligence (AI) growth also increasing demand for its advanced chips and advanced packaging. "We can expect 2024 to be a healthy growth year for TSMC," CEO C.C. Wei told an earnings briefing, with the company expecting to "do better than the overall industry" next year. "In these couple of months, we have started to see demand stabilise in the PC and smartphone end market" and inventory controls have become "more healthy than we thought". "Right now, do we see the bottom? Very close," Wei said, but added it was too soon to say how strong the recovery would be as customers remain cautious because of macro weakness and China's slow economic recovery.
