Dividend Analysis As is the case with most midstream companies, ONEOK pays a very attractive dividend to its investors. As of the time of writing, the stock yields a rather attractive 9.08%. One thing though that has disappointed many investors in the sector in the past year though is that several of these firms ended up cutting their payouts. This was a direct reaction to the troubles faced by the upstream firms that were cutting back on their spending in order to preserve their balance sheet strengths. ONEOK was not part of this crowd though. As we can see here, the company maintained its dividend straight through 2020: Source: Seeking Alpha One thing that we want to examine though is the company’s ability to maintain this dividend. This is especially true since the market appears to expect that the company may have to cut given the firm’s stock price performance over the past year. The usual way that we do this is by looking at the company’s distributable cash flow. The distributable cash flow of a midstream company is a non-GAAP metric that theoretically tells us the amount of cash that was generated by the company’s ordinary operations that is theoretically available to be distributed to the common stockholders. In the third quarter of 2020, ONEOK boasted a distributable cash flow of $540.9 million, an increase over the $480.9 million that the company had in the prior year quarter. This was sufficient to cover the dividend 1.30 times over. This figure is obviously above the 1.20x that analysts typically consider to be sustainable. It is only roughly in-line with the 1.30x minimum that I usually prefer to see though in order to add a certain degree of comfort. Thus, if something causes its cash flow to decline, like a sustained decline in the demand for natural gas, then the company might struggle to maintain its dividend. This does seem somewhat unlikely though for reasons that were already discussed and thus ONEOK’s dividend is probably reasonably safe. Market Performance And Opportunity As was the case with many other companies in the energy industry, ONEOK saw its stock price utterly demolished by the outbreak of the pandemic and the resultant decline in energy prices. Unlike some other natural gas-focused midstream peers such as Williams Companies (WMB), ONEOK has not since recovered: As we can see here, ONEOK’s stock price is down 45.67% in the past year while Williams has been almost flat. This appears to be somewhat unjustified. As already shown, ONEOK’s recent financial performance has generally been better than it was prior to the pandemic but the stock market appears to be discounting that. This may create an opportunity for new investors.
