Respektabler Rebound. Geht es es hier vielleicht sogar wieder auf das alte Niveau bei 1€? Nachrichten sind ja gar nicht so schlecht.

Midsummer participates in groundbreaking Australian research project to reach 30 percent efficiency in tandem solar cells
[Stockholm, Sweden, and Sydney, Australia, April 17, 2023.] Swedish solar energy company Midsummer has been selected to be part of a research team aiming to reach 30 percent efficiency in Si/CIGS tandem solar cells. The project, which is led by the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, also includes world’s leading solar panel manufacturers and has been awarded funding of AUD $3.08m from Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) with total project budget of AUD $11.55m [USD 8.21m;EUR 7.55m].
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) will lead the tandem solar cell project, with the most cash investment funded by ARENA. A significant part of the research will be carried out on the Midsummer UNO research machine for the production of thin film solar cells that the university previously purchased from Midsummer. The objective of the project is to produce a highly efficient and stable tandem solar cell with already commercialized technologies. The project's goal is to achieve over 30 percent efficiency.
Present mass-produced silicon panels have an efficiency of around 20 percent and thin film panels like CIGS (copper, indium, gallium, selenide and/or sulphur) slightly lower. By combining the technologies in so-called tandem solar cells, it is theoretically possible to reach a much higher efficiency (which is measured as a percentage according to the proportion of photons that are converted into electricity). In tandem solar cells, different semiconductor materials are combined in one device, each of which absorbs different areas of the solar spectrum. The result is more efficient solar cells.
Leading research institute in solar energy
The UNSW School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering is one of the leading solar research institutes in the world. UNSW Professor Xiaojing Hao, who heads the project, comments:
“We acknowledge the strong support from ARENA. By working closely with our project partners, world-leading chalcogenide and Si PV researchers and manufacturers, this project will provide next-generation, high-performance, durable and cost-effective tandem cells that can be rapidly scaled up."
"Midsummer's system an obvious choice"
“A tandem solar cell with silicon + chalcogenide has the best conditions for rapid commercialization as they are two mature, stable and proven technologies. As Midsummer's DUO system already today uses the same solar cell size as silicon solar cells, it would be the obvious production tool choice when the world's largest solar panels manufacturers want to commercialize tandem solar cells on a large scale”, said Midsummer's CEO Sven Lindström.
Silicon-based tandem solar cells are seen as the main track to commercialize solar panels with over 30 percent efficiency. High-bandgap CIGS cells, which can be manufactured on Midsummer's machines, have demonstrated among the highest efficiencies for potential peak cells to combine with silicon and have the advantage of a very long lifetime as well as already proven scalability in mass production.

!Midsummer receives grant payment from Invitalia of 6.4 million euros!
[Stockholm, Sweden, and Puglia, Italy, April 11, 2022.] Swedish solar energy leader Midsummer has received a grant payment of EUR 6.4m (SEK 73.4m) from the Italian investment authority Invitalia for the establishment of a factory for the production of thin film solar cells in Bari, Italy. This is a first instalment of the agreement concluded between the parties, which will give Midsummer EUR 22m in total in the form of grants to start production in what will be Europe's largest factory for the production of thin film solar cells.
In February, Midsummer shipped three DUO machines for the production of thin film solar cells to its subsidiary Midsummer Italia in Bari. Thus, a total of five DUO machines have been installed in Bari, and the conditions met according to the agreement between the parties for a first payment from the state investment authority Invitalia. The machines are manufactured in Järfälla, Sweden.
After a recent on-site inspection at the factory, Invitalia is fully satisfied with the installations and payment has now been made to Midsummer Italia in the amount of 6.4 million euros. In addition, a smaller establishment grant will shortly be paid out from the Italian region of Puglia, where Bari is the capital.
According to the final terms of Midsummer's agreement with Italy's state investment authority Invitalia, Midsummer Italia will receive a total of approximately 22 million euros (just over SEK 240 million) in direct support in the form of grants to start production.
The start of production in Italy is expected to take place later this year. At full operation, the factory can produce 50 MW of solar cells per year, making it the largest of its kind in Europe.
Invitalia is a state institution for investment and economic development, owned by the Italian Ministry of Finance. Invitalia strives to increase Italy's economic growth and focuses on strategic sectors for development and employment. Renewable energy has been identified as an important sector.
