Bill Miller's fund took a stake in Medifast. Here's why. Bill Miller's $1.4 billion Opportunity Trust fund took a stake in Baltimore-based Medifast Inc. during the third quarter because it predicts the company's stock price may double. The fund revealed its investment in the "little known Baltimore-based health and wellness company" in a quarterly letter to fund shareholders authored by portfolio manager Samantha McLemore. About 3.09% of the fund, or $43 million, is invested in Medifast, according to a document listing the portfolio holdings. A Medifast spokeswoman said the company does not comment on investors' positions. Miller has his own ties to Baltimore. He operates his firm, Miller Value Partners, out of One South Street in downtown. He is also the former chief investment office of Legg Mason Inc., which is headquartered in the same tower in Harbor East where Medifast is now located. Miller rose to fame when his fund at Legg Mason beat the S&P 500 for 15 consecutive years through 2005. Samantha McLemore and Bill Miller manage the $1.4 billion Miller Opportunity Trust fund. McLemore wrote that Medifast has "done a remarkable job" of growing sales by orienting its business around its network of "coaches." Medifast pays coaches commissions to sell the company's weight-loss and dieting products directly to customers. Since CEO Dan Chard joined the company in 2016, Medifast's sales have been on the rise. Medifast expects sales this year to be $730 million to $750 million, more than double from $301.6 million in 2017, Chard's first full year at the helm. "They aimed to double the business in three years and accomplished it in two," McLemore wrote. "Now they’re working on a plan to double revenues again. They’ve done all of this profitably while returning capital to shareholders." Chard told the Business Journal he expects Medifast to double every three or four years. He also wants the company to reach $1 billion in sales by 2021. Medifast launched its international business in Hong Kong and Singapore earlier this year and expects to keep growing sales in the U.S. as well. Medifast (NYSE: MED) shares were up 1% in mid-day trading Wednesday to $106.75. The company's stock was at one point one of the biggest gainers in the entire U.S. in 2018, reaching a high of about $260 as its quarterly sales accelerated. Shares are down almost 15% year to date. McLemore attributed the decline to "competitive concerns" because of troubles at WW — formerly known as Weight Watchers — and Nutrisystem. Some investors have also been concerned about costs related to Medifast's implementation of new business planning software. "At the current level, the company trades for just 14.5x earnings with 20%-plus top-*** growth going forward and a 3% dividend yield," McLemore wrote. "If it reaches its 2021 target, it’s trading for only 10x earnings out a couple of years. We believe Medifast has the potential to double."
