Beverly-based LexaGene developing analyzer to detect coronavirus

BEVERLY – With over 9,500 confirmed cases of coronavirus, which has already caused over 200 deaths, medical experts and biotech firms are working around the clock to develop technology to better detect and treat the disease.
In Beverly, biotechnology company LexaGene has received many inquiries regarding the ability of its technology for detecting coronavirus.
In a press release issued on Jan. 27, Dr. Jack Regan, LexaGene's CEO and founder, explained that the company's genetic analyzer can quickly detect new pathogens in just one hour, on-site.
"Currently, the traditional process requires that samples from sick individuals must be transported to laboratories for manual processing," he said. "This is extremely inefficient and introduces a significant time-delay that can have severe consequences for disease spread. Today's coronavirus outbreak highlights why LexaGene's technology is needed so desperately."
Initially detected in December in Wuhan, China, the virus has spread to other parts of Asia, as well as to Europe, Australia and North America; in the United States, six cases had been confirmed as of Jan. 30.
"Developing a new diagnostic test to detect this coronavirus is important and has already been done by numerous groups," Regan shared in the release. "The challenge is bringing these manually performed tests out of the specialized reference laboratories that can take days to return results and instead to the points-of-need, which are the clinics, hospitals, and airports where answers are needed in one hour or less."
Regan explained that no technology currently exists that allows for these key locations to readily screen for a new threat within days of an outbreak being identified.
"LexaGene is addressing this urgent problem and has developed the first ever, easy-to-use, open-access diagnostic analyzer that is designed to help control the spread of deadly outbreaks such as this 2019 coronavirus," he said.
The incubation period for coronavirus is about 3 days, meaning that an individual could be contagious before showing any symptoms. With LexaGene's technology, Regan said he suspects detection could take place 12 to 24 hours before symptoms of the virus appear.
Getting the technology to market
Currently finalizing the design of the commercial instrument, LexaGene will begin to manufacture the device in a few months, with the expectation of achieving first commercial sales in the third quarter of this year. In order to implement the technology and begin processing human samples in hospitals, clinics, airports and other locations, LexaGene will need either Emergency Use Authorization or 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration.
Because LexaGene is a pre-revenue company that relies on capital raises to progress its technology to the point where commercial sales can begin, Regan explained that the timeline is quite rigid.
"If we were offered $5-$10 million tomorrow, we would change our strategy and be more aggressive about development," he said. "This would certainly bring in our product launch timeline ... We continue to keep our door open to investors, philanthropists, etc., who believe in the importance of our technology in helping prevent disease spread by rapid diagnostics."
Regan pointed out that every several years, a new pathogen emerges that causes illness and death.
"People need to remember that this outbreak is not unexpected," he said. "Epidemiologists strongly believe that a new pathogen will eventually cause millions of deaths worldwide. To better prevent such a catastrophe, it is critical to have technology like LexaGene's commercially available."

DD = Due Dilligence
