Next year will be a huge year for BYD. It will also come out with L2+ ADAS across a whole range of models which I will talk about in another substack post. It will be building 1200V super chargers around China and deploying double-gun charging, 1000V electric platform EVs that can also charge at 6C. When legacy OEMs started their process of designing EVs, they were comparing their EVs vs what BYD had in 2023. But since their EVs won’t come out until 2026, they should be comparing products to what BYD might have in 2026. A recent chart show close to 50000 auto sector job losses in Germany between tier 1 suppliers and OEMs like VW, Audi, Tesla and Ford. The electrification of auto industry as well as move into smart car and AI have ushered in a new era. This is somewhat reminiscent of the 2010s when big feature phone companies like Nokia got wiped out as smart phones swept through phone industry with much better phones. The auto industry now is facing the same dilemma. Go Big or go home. The legacy automakers need to step up their development cycle and get out of their comfort zone to not get wiped out by BYD and other Chinese automakers.

Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more BYD operates on a different pace than everyone else TP HUANG DEC 10 READ IN APP Every month, there is a new MIIT filing coming out with a list of new models that will be launched over the next few months. That can come either 1 or 2 month or even further out. Most recently, BYD managed to include around 8 new models in the latest MIIT filing. You can see some of them in my posts here and here. They really did file many models this time, which means expect a lot of launch parties in Q1. Now, some of these filings are just model refresh, but even that could be a big deal. Having DM5.0 in some of these platforms are game changers for the economics. Qin+ and Seal 05 DM-i will come out early next year. That will finally complete the process of migrating to DM5.0 for all the major DM-i models in BYD family. All things considered, they likely got it done in around 9 months. Thanks for reading TP’s Substack! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Pledge your support But there were many surprises, including the unveiling of 2025 Sea Lion 07 DM-i/DM-p. This seems to be replacement for Frigate 07 & Ocean version of Tang. They are both the same size and use DM5.0, but how BYD packed them with different goodies is quite interesting. Both of them comes optional with Lidar, which indicates Lidar will be coming next year to all the 200k+ RMB models. Lidar + Dipilot-300 (Orin-X ADAS chip) means the model is equipped to do City NOA level of ADAS. But aside from that, DM-p gets 200kW front motor, 150kW rear motor + 1.5T 115kW engine for a total of 465kW, which is close to Bao-5’s 505kW. This is more than what’s on N7, Sea Lion 07 EV and Han. While it advertises top speed of 200km/h, I would not be surprised if it can go even higher than that. All of this is made possible by BYD’s high-discharge/charging PHEV batteries. What other PHEV SUV in its price range (without using a huge range extension battery pack) can reach this level of acceleration and top speed? It is quite the powerful motor for a B class SUV. DM-i has just the 200kW motor, but it comes optional with drone hangar, which will make it quite the attractive vehicle for outdoor trips. One could imagine Tang, Bao-5 and N7 also getting this option in the future. In fact, they have made this drone hangar so cheap that 钛3 (Tai-3, formerly known as Super-3) will be coming standard with it. Imagine that, all variants of this 200k RMB (likely starting at 199k) off-road SUV will be getting drone support. That will be fun and affordable for a lot of people. Consider that this was a technology that just became available a year ago with off-road version of U8 for 100k RMB, it’s quite amazing that the cost has come down so much on this technology that N9, Tai-3 and Sea Lion 07 will all be getting it. In a way, the deployment of such a new technology (that’s not available with any other EV makers) across so many models this quickly is emblematic of BYD’s general pace of development. It not only deploys new technology like DM5.0, high charge/discharge PHEV batteries and drone hangars, but can deploy them across most of the major models in a year. That is truly abnormal for an automaker of its size. So when we talk about changes unseen in a century, it’s companies like BYD that’s driving these changes. It’s about disrupting a relatively stable industry with new and rapid product development cycles and up-ending brand power that took decades to build.
